A Salute to the Women of Kabylia

The charismatic Kabyle women who still wear the traditional Berber outfits are to be honored. Adorned with colorful head scarves, futas,* and robes, they walk with style and grace. Colorful belts they make themselves hold the robes around the waist. This clothing outlines their charm and beauty. Like partridges they proudly stand and walk: outfits like feathers glowing in the light of the day.

The courage, determination, and beauty of these women inspired me to honor them in song.

Since we were kids, you taught us good from bad. You taught us how to behave, to obey, to respect. We honor you today and recognize that we received our best education from YOU, while raising us in odds times.
This poetry is also dedicated to the younger generation of educated women: they too will grow wise.
Each one of the youth will stand tall to preserve the culture and cultivate the language. May you remind others who might otherwise neglect their heritage.
We mustn’t forget that as our history is edited to encompass forgotten facts, these young women will have the opportunity to teach it officially throughout the education system in North Africa.
* Futa, = piece of colorful fabric worn on top the robe and around the waist.
